Shawn Welk, owner of Bavarian Rennsport in Jacksonville, Fl. points out that going to the service department at the dealership for repairs often leads you to pay retail price on parts plus 10% over, with an hourly rate of 30+% more than what Bavarian Rennsport charges.

“[At the dealership] customers walk in the door expecting to pay because they are at that dealership to pay, and they are going to get what they expected. BMW is going to charge them over and over. When they go to an independent shop, like mine, and walk in the door with something they got quoted $1100 for and I quote them for $800, they are pleasantly surprised.”

Welk goes on to state that fear (of the cost) is one of the biggest stressors when people walk into a dealership, and that dealerships often portray a sense of urgency with items that need to be repaired. “They want to sell you as much service as they can. People get scared because it turns into you need this and this, and you need it done now. All of a sudden you bring your car in for an oil change and you leave there with a $2500 bill of stuff that doesn’t really need to be fixed right away.“

Prioritizing repairs proves to be key at independent BMW service centers. “We prioritize very well,” says Shawn Welk. “If someone comes in with a laundry list of items from the BMW dealer that they need done to their vehicle, we’ll go through it and prioritize what needs to be done now, and then later. We create a project plan and help you plan a schedule that works for your budget and time”

What precautions are you taking during COVID-19 to ensure the health of your staff and customers?

✅ We keep a super clean shop, but we have kicked things up. We have completely disinfected our building with a hospital-grade disinfectant, which we are doing 3 times per day. We disinfect the surface area of every vehicle that we go in. We sterilize every piece of mail and received parts as each arrives. All of our staff are required to wear gloves and masks so please don’t be scared if you come to the shop. These measures are necessary to ensure we stay healthy for you and our families.
✅ We are now offering courtesy pick-up and drop-off services, excluding oil changes and FREE Vehicle Health Checks. Charges apply over 25 miles ($1.50 per mile).
✅ You must have an appointment. When you arrive for your appointment, pull up to the cones or park in a parking spot in the adjacent lot (white building). After parking, place keys in the blue dropbox.
✅ All inspections, estimates, approvals, payments will all be handled digitally. No cash will be accepted at this time.
✅ Upon completion of work and time for pickup, we will call you to see if you want to pick up your car or if you would like to arrange a dropoff.
✅ When your vehicle is complete, we will call you to coordinate pickup at our shop or we can dropoff to you. If you are picking up, we will text you a code so you can retrieve your keys from a secure lockbox once you arrive on site.
