BMW e39 5 Series Faulty Cooling System

If your BMW e39 5 series has a faulty cooling system, we can help! Our Jacksonville BMW mechanics specialize in affordable BMW repairs.

Established in the US in 1997, the BMW e39 five-series had several variations in the American market, including the 525i, 528i, 530i, 540i and M5, before ending production in 2003. The e39 engines ranged from six to eight cylinders and 150-190 horsepower. A common problem for these Bimmers is a faulty cooling system. If left unchecked, a faulty cooling system could result in serious damage to these high-performance engines.

Do not ignore it if the “Service Engine Soon” light illuminates on the dashboard. Your BMW is definitely trying to tell you something. For the e39 5-series, it could mean a thermostat failure. Because the thermostats are electronically controlled, they are known to short-out. When this happens, the thermostat can melt portions of the wiring. The V8 engines are the most common Bimmers with this issue. If you notice that the temperature gauge is climbing higher than normal at the same time the light on the dashboard illuminates, the chances are high that you have a defective thermostat. Contact our local BMW mechanics to properly diagnose and resolve the issue before it causes further harm to the engine.

A faulty water pump could be another common cause for an e39 engine overheating. If your radiator is filled with coolant/water, and it still runs hot, that is one way to test to see if the water pump is bad. If it does run hot, it means the water is not pumping to the right areas to properly cool the engine. If you take your vehicle in for the regularly scheduled BMW Inspection 1 and Inspection 2 maintenance checks, this problem can be caught prior to causing damage.

In a few cases, the e39 5-series will have a defective radiator. Again, if you take the vehicle to our independent BMW repair shop for proper diagnoses and inspection, we will be able to repair your car professionally and get you back on the road.
