The first edition of BMW’s popular Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) line is the BMW X5. When BMW bought Land Rover, a company known for designing very sturdy, off-road vehicles in 1994, they started designing the BMW X5. Since 2006, when BMW stopped production of the e53 X5, they released two more generations of the X5—the e70 and the F15. Throughout its life, the X5 has become a very popular SAV in the US, selling over 200,000 units in its first seven years. One of the common issues with the X5 is coolant leaking from the car.

The first sign of a coolant leak is the warning light will begin to indicate low coolant levels, a matter easily solved by simply adding coolant. However, if the coolant warning light comes on again, the car is likely having a greater issue. Many times, by looking at the ground under the car, you should see a puddle of coolant on the asphalt. The car will also fill with a sweet syrupy smell, and then sometimes neither of the issues will occur, but the low coolant level light will stay on.

Because the coolant in a BMW runs through so many tubes, hoses, gaskets, and containers the problem could be a number of things. Most common in the BMW X5 is the valley pan—a staging area where coolant collects before being transferred to different parts of the engine block. The valley pan can corrode, and then it will leak coolant from a hole that just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Another common issue with older e53 X5s that have a low coolant level light is a cracked expansion tank.

Because the coolant leak could suggest a faulty head gasket or a broken auxiliary fan, this is a very serious issue that needs to be repaired immediately. Our trained BMW repair experts can identify the precise problem affecting the e53 X5’s coolant system and find a solution before any serious engine damage occurs.
