The BMW F-10 5 series includes a variety of models, the Sedan, xDrive and Touring/Wagon. Introduced in 2010, they continue to be produced today. Since the car is relatively newer, there are some bugs and common problems that are beginning to appear. Among the common problems, the 5 series F10 has been known to have battery issues on short trips, which causes serious inconveniences for many owners of this BMW.

Some owners report that their F-10 will have dead batteries after they drive a short distance. With the help of a good samaritan or by calling the BMW Mobility Service, the owner will have to jump start the car to get it running again. The drivers with this issue say that it happens only on short trips but not on longer trips. This is due to the fact that the engine charges a battery when you’re driving, so the longer drives actually charge the batter sufficiently so it can start again later. The shorter trips only drain the battery.

Other drivers report that their dashboard display will alert that there is an “increased battery discharge while the vehicle is stationary,” even though no outside electrical devices are connected to the vehicle, such as a charging mobile device. It is a possibility that the new F-10 5 series has so many new electronics that the battery drains much faster than on less technologically-advanced BMW models. It is also a possibility that you could have a faulty alternator, which is also responsible for charging the battery while it’s running. Some owners have even reported that if they accidentally left the dome-light on, it drains the entire battery.

By purchasing a new battery, you will not solve this problem. The issue is not from driver error or your habits, it is a common problem found in many BMW F-10 5 series vehicles.
