The e65 and e66 seven-series was originally introduced to the American public in 2002. Produced until 2009 , the e65 and e66 had a majorly different body style from the “traditional” BMW chassis. These sleek and stylish models were very popular, but there are several common issues experienced by owners. An unknown growling sound coming from the engine is a common malfunction.
Many of the e65 and e66 seven-series are approaching 100k miles, which is the point when owners notice a growling in the engine. It can even happen in vehicles with less mileage too. Drivers will first notice a rough idling or misfire, followed by unknown whines, howls, and growling. Some owners say it sounds like there are two engines operating under the hood, or a loud exhaust system on a nearby car. In most cases, this will happen when the engine is revving at low speeds.
The air conditioning belt could be one possible cause of the engine growling and whining. It could also be the alternator or the auxiliary heater, or even the oil separator valve. Some owners are able to test this by running the engine and then removing the dipstick to check the oil levels. If the engine changes pitch, it could be the oil separator valve or other seals and gaskets in the area of the engine.
