BMW has prepared an inspection, approved repair procedure, and reimbursement policy in keeping with the terms of the proposed class settlement. This settlement will only pertain to US residents and is not a recall of any kind.”
For heavily-used e46 Bimmers, especially the ones that are used for racing, this is a common problem. But heavily-used e46 Bimmers are the only ones with this problem. Even a well-maintained vehicle can get tears or cracks in the rear subframe. One sign to look for is erratic handling at high and medium speeds. When you are on bumpy roads, you should also listen for loud bangs, clanks or clunks in the rear of the vehicle. Be aware that in some cases the sounds can also occur on relatively smooth roads.
