The tail light is one of the most important safety features on a BMW, as it can prevent dangerous rear-end collisions. On the BMW e46 3-series, the tail lamp wiring commonly wears out overtime, and in the 2000’s, there was a nationwide recall on over 241,000 BMWs. While no accidents were officially attributed to the recall, it is still extremely important to have this fixed by a trained BMW technician, like the ones at Bavarian Rennsport, to keep your family and your car safe on the road.
The E46 BMWs that are included in the faulty tail map wiring system recall include the 2002-05 three-series sedans, model numbers 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi. Other e46 series produced between 1999-2005 might also have this problem, but BMW did not include them in the recall.
If your car isn’t included in the recall, before you rush to an independent BMW repair expert at our shop, you must first check to see that the bulb didn’t go out. We recommend purchasing a replacement bulb and then testing it to see if it works. If the tail light still does not work, try cleaning the area where the bulb screws. Use some steel wool or a rough towel to wipe away corrosion and debris. Then try replacing the new bulb and test it again. If it still doesn’t work, then you could have faulty wiring.
Our independent BMW service shop can replace the electrical connections to the rear lamps to fix this problem. If your vehicle is included in the recall, then the cost for this replacement could be covered by BMW.
