In 1994, shortly after BMW purchased Land Rover, production design on the BMW E53 X5. BMW wanted to design a sport utility vehicle, and the concept was to create an SUV that combines the sophistication of a BMW and the manliness of a Land Rover. In the end, BMW designers focused on the sophistication and the company decided to market the E53 X5 as a sport activity vehicle (SAV) instead of a sport utility vehicle (SUV).
