B58 & B48 Common Issues: 2016 & Up BMW 340i, 330i, M240i, and X3

The B58 fixed most of what plagued the N55; however, it didn't fix everything.

If you own a 2016 or newer 340i, 330i, M240i, or X3, your BMW has a B58 or B48. These engines have a much better, well-deserved reputation than the N20 and N55 before them. However, it doesn't mean the engine is maintenance-free. A few specific issues still show up, and catching them early keeps an inexpensive fix from turning into an expensive one.

The coolant expansion tank

The plastic expansion tank on B46/B48/B58 engines cracks along its seams after enough heat cycles. It's one of the most common complaints discussed among these engines. Something you should be watching for is a low coolant warning, a sweet smell after driving, or a white or pink crusty residue around the tank itself. BMW already revised the part because of these issues. Thankfully, the current tank supersedes an earlier version, which proves the original design had a very noticeable weak point. It's a cheap part, but a risky one to ignore. A cracked tank can lead to overheating if it's not caught early.

VANOS solenoid seal wear

A rough idle, hesitation off the line, or a check engine light pointing at valve timing usually traces back to the VANOS solenoid. On these engines, a fine mesh filter inside the solenoid can clog or tear, which restricts oil flow to the camshaft adjusters and throws off valve timing. It's a moderate fix, not a catastrophic one, but it's worth addressing quickly. Prolonged driving on a failing VANOS solenoid on these engines does carry a real risk of further internal damage.

Less common but still worth knowing

Oil filter housing gasket seepage and PCV or crankcase vent valve issues both show up on these engines too, usually as minor oil seepage or a rough idle that doesn't trace back to VANOS. Neither is urgent on its own. A PCV issue that's left unchecked raises crankcase pressure, and that makes any existing gasket leak worse.

Does my BMW have this engine?

The B58 is the six-cylinder, found in the 340i, 440i, and M240i. The B48 is the four-cylinder, found in the 330i, 230i, X1, X2, and X3. They share a lot of the same architecture and the same failure points above, but they're different engines under different hoods. Worth knowing which one your BMW actually has.

The bottom line

None of these issues are expensive on their own, but if you have a few issues that happen at once, it can lead to a hefty price tag. The real risk isn't the repair cost. It's assuming a newer engine doesn't need the same attention an older one does. Catching the small stuff, the tank, the PCV valve keeps these engines living up to their reputation. If you're noticing a rough idle or a coolant warning, book an inspection, and we'll find out which one it is before it becomes something bigger.
