Bavarian Rennsport offers race track preparation services to make sure your car is dialed in no matter what type of event you are participating in whether it be Track, Drag, Autocross, or Drifting. With super-wide stances, ultra-rigid bodies and incredibly precise handling MINI Coopers were made to rule the track. As an avid JCW enthusiast, the ultimate goal is to drive your vehicle to the limit with other competitors, while also upholding the legacy and setting a good example for the younger car generations to come after us. The vast majority of modern track day drivers are simply interested in enjoying their high-performance street cars without having to worry about the police, pedestrians, or oblivious drivers causing unsafe driving conditions.
Do you have a MINI Cooper and want to get out on the track, but dont think your car will perform the way that you want it to. Don’t worry everybody has these same thoughts racing through their head. There are plenty of ways to go about race car preparation and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, the most important part of racing that you need is an ability to feel the car with your feet, hands, and butt. These useful skills can only come from time spent in the car called seat time.
As nice as it is to have big fancy brake kits, suspension upgrades or other expensive modifications (excluding tires) are simply not needed to create the profound driving skills necessary to rule the track. There are track day modifications to suit any budget because the most important thing for beginners is to just get in the car and drive it in a controlled environment. With each round of improvements and revisions made, you can up the ante from the basic essential track day preparations to full-blown track day modifications.
For the entry-level or first-time MINI racer, we will go over the basic necessities of getting you and your vehicle onto the track safely and with confidence. Part of owning a car is the relationship that we develop through the years of driving and performing general maintenance. It is critical to guarantee the job is done right the first time. With recommended OEM supplied components and by following the general maintenance schedule, your vehicle is sure to continue giving you years of enjoyment on the street or track. Below we have broken down the track day preparations that we recommend to perform and the order in which we think they should be carried out from our years of experience on the track. Bavarian Rennsport will always be here to provide critical advice, service and repair for your daily driver / track car as you begin your career and to offer the best performance parts to help your car grow alongside you for the best racing experience.
Essential Race Prep Service & Maintenance
The first thing you should always do when preparing for a track event is inspect the vehicles components. If you skip this important step you will start to discover that parts are missing and can cause a catastrophic failure while driving and it could bring your track day to a halt. Every critical component should be inspected because even on modern cars bolts and clips can become loose. Older cars need a very thorough check because time and vibration may cause parts to weaken or vibrate off the car. It’s crucial to check the tightness of brake caliper bolts, engine mounts, gearbox mounts, the exhaust, subframe mountings, the steering rack, and all of the other suspension fixings. You will be putting this car through the works and the last thing that you want is something to fail while on the track.
The next essential race prep step for your vehicle is a thorough service, including engine oil, gearbox, differential, brakes, and the vehicle’s cooling system. Fluids are like the vehicle’s blood so making sure that they are circulating properly is the key. We also recommend using fluids that are more tuned to harsh or high-performance use that will keep your car running at an optimal performance level.
Make sure your tire tread life is in good condition. If it’s your first track day then the chances are you won’t wear them down very much, but it’s still important to have some tread left at the end of the day, especially if you plan on driving your car home. The next important tire subject is PSI (Pounds per Square Inch); pressures are critical to the way a car handles, and a lot of fine tuning can be done to suit your racing style and the weather conditions.
The front suspension ‘toe’ angle can also be tweaked to adjust the turn-in (the initial reaction to a steering input). Most street cars are set to be slightly slow to react which makes it a bit safer for the average driver. Since we are using the vehicle for a track application a small amount of toe-in usually sharpens up the response but can make the car a bit more twitchy in the turns.
Brakes take a hammering on track and heat is their biggest enemy. The easiest modification is to fit race styled brake pads and just as importantly racing brake fluid which will help prevent fade. If you go with a racing style fluid always remember, it has to be changed more often than ordinary road fluid and should be checked before every event. It is also common to remove any guards and other obstructions to free airflow around the brake discs. If after that you still have fade then ducting fresh air from the front of the car using heat-resistant tubing pointing at the middle of the discs may help. Some people get fresh air in by removing the fog lights from the front apron and ducting the tube into the hole.
Exhaust / Intake
Although we’ve suggested the engine should not be tuned, there is something to be said for fitting a sporty exhaust and air intake. This may make a very small improvement to power but a single-box exhaust will weigh less and a cold-air intake kit can improve power slightly and tidy up the engine bay a bit. And, of course, if nothing else will make your car sound faster! But watch those noise limits – there’s nothing more frustrating than being turned away for noise.
You might consider fitting a good seat and harness to hold you in securely as you throw the car around the track. Being more directly connected to the car gives a better feel, but seats are a very personal thing so it’s worth trying a few out before buying.
Simplify and add lightness by stripping out unnecessary weight is the next step, as this will improve performance and give your consumables and suspension an easier time too. But don’t get too hung up on it at this stage. As a rough guide removing less than 10% of the car’s original weight is not noticeable; so just remove things you really don’t need – the back seat, spare wheel, carpet, and sound-deadening material, etc.
Our FREE Inspection includes a visual inspection of brakes, suspension, tires, and fluids, a visual inspection of engine bay for oil and coolant leaks, and fault code scan.
If your vehicle has a known issue, a diagnostic is required. Please be advised that in the event of any unexpected wait time other clients’ vehicles may take longer than expected to diagnose and treat so unfortunate delays do occur. We will get to your vehicle as soon as possible.

The reality is that while BMWs can be a joy to own and drive, they can also be more than a little scary to maintain. The team at Bavarian Rennsport has been great at taking that anxiety away. They have always been honest, forthright, and willing to take time to discuss options and the details of the diagnosis. They have also taken time to discuss all sorts of additional questions related to upgrades, and even helping me decide whether to keep the car or move on to something else. Shawn in particular has spent extensive time on the phone discussing options and the virtues of one car over another. Chaz and Jeremy are also two individuals I’ve worked with extensively, and they’ve constantly been knowledgable and patient. Great shop and great team.
i drove from Atlanta to Jacksonville to buy a Ferrari F430, i wanted a pre purchase inspection done , since it was a Sunday no shop was opened, i goggled Ferrari repair shops and Bavarian popped up, called and left them a message , Sunday night. I got a call from Chad the next morning, they were able to accommodate me on short notice, excellent customer service, they checked out the Ferrari on my behalf, and emailed me a copy of the report. They did a great job. will definitely do business with them again.
Every experience I’ve had with Bavarian Rennsport has been outstanding. Customer service is second to none. I have nothing but good things to say about their shop, their staff, and their service. I would recommend them to anyone.
I am the proud owner of a 2004 BMW Z-4, 3.0i with only 42K miles. My nightmare started when the transmission died and had the car taken to Bavarian Rennsport. After a new transmission from BMW we thought that all is well and on our way, two weeks later car died transmission light on, car will not move, burned out module, which was replaced, the car only went a short distance shuts down again. Sent car to BMW diagnostic they said burned out dash board need replaced at a cost of thousands. Shawn the owner said that cant be, and he will find the cause, they spent thousand of their dollars to figure out what was the cause.A burned out door sensor that told the transmission the doors are open and the car should go into park mode, if you keep driving you rip up the transmission.NO ONE COULD FIND THIS CAUSE THEY DID. What was my cost I paid for the module, they absorbed the rest. What a stand up company, no other place to take your BMW.
Since I relocated to Jax, the Bavarian Renns sport team take great care of my 2001 Porsche….They are very honest, knowledgeable, professional and top qualified technicians. Highly recommended!! Thanks, Ric
I am new to the Bavarian family. My first experience was them working on my all original 1973 2002 Tii a couple of months ago. Communication was great and the work was done in a timely manner. Because of this experience, I trusted them to pick up my new addition to the family last week, 1976 S14 2002. It was a flawless experience. Will get it back to you this week to tidy up some loose ends. Can’t thank you enough for the communication and timeliness of your work.

My relationship with Bavarian Rennsport began with me calling them not knowing what was going on with my car. They quickly had my car towed to the shop, started diagnostics and later that week gave me a full understanding of what was going on with my car. After a short period of time, the car was fixed and I was on the road again. I was able to leave with piece of mind and confidence in The condition of the car. The team at Rennsport is truly like no other. They treated me like family, kept me updated on the condition of the car, reassured me when I was overwhelmed, and conducted business in a very professional manor. I am blessed that my car was taken to Rennsport rather than any other shop or dealer. This team is comprised of true BMW enthusiasts who are passionate of the work that they do. They went above and beyond and their exceptional work shows in my car. I will continue to conduct business with them and I greatly appreciate everything they have done for me and my car.
Had my wife’s AMG GLE Coupe serviced at Bavarian Rennsport today. What a really nice, professional, and efficient crew. They did awesome work and the car was completed on time as promised. I am so pleased, I will be introducing my other vehicle to Bavarian Rennsport in the form of an oil change hopefully tomorrow or Friday (and it’s not due yet). 🙂 If you want first class service at a business that’s well versed in high-end vehicles, I highly recommend this establishment.
