Common Repairs on the BMW e65/e66 7 Series

The BMW e65 and e66 7 Series hit the United States market in 2002 and was distributed until 2009. Attracting a flood of new BMW enthusiasts, the BMW e65 and e66 7 Series replaced the very popular e38 and had a completely redesigned body. The consumer models include the e65 and e66, while the e67 was a bullet-proof model used for security vehicles, and the e68 was a hydrogen model. Because of the age on these vehicles, there are some common problems owners experience. They include:

Downshifting and jerking problems: Some owners have noticed the car jerks and shakes when the driver tries to downshift from second to first gear. Drivers also report this problem when shifting up to second gear.

Growling sound coming from engine: What starts out as a little rough idling, soon starts getting louder and turns into an unknown whining or growling that comes out from under the hood. Some drivers said it sounds like there is a “second engine” in the vehicle.

iDrive system experiences crashes: The iDrive controls your BMWs sound system, climate and other systems in the 7-series. Because of its innovative features, it has some bugs. For instance, the CD changers get stuck, radios stop working, and even the keyless entry system can go out.

Steering wheel vibrations above 35mph: Some drivers report that when they reach 35mph the steering wheel will start to shimmy or shake. The drivers say the handling feels very loose and is sub-standard to what you would expect from a BMW.

Rough idling and stalling: With the e65 or e66, the BMW may idle very rough or even stall, and the car cannot be able to reach speeds of 35mph or higher. A temporary fix includes turning the vehicle off and then restarting it, but this is only temporary and does not address the problem.
